Screen Nights at #12 Rutland Place

Screen Nights

Screen Nights is a series of film screening/concerts happening at  12 Rutland Place in January. The idea being to bring ideas from different musical scenes together for low cost nights out. As part of Screen Nights there will be three films shown which showcase different musical scenes: All Ears – a film about the L.A. beat scene, A Joyful Slog – a film about the independent music scene in Ireland, and PressPausePlay – a film about being an artist, whatever the discipline, in the digital age. As well as the film each night will have a related act performing, which will allow the audience to ask questions about what they’ve seen and listened to.

One of the things I’m really delighted about with Screen Nights is that we’re able to showcase some great Irish acts, in A Joyful Slog, and Irish filmmakers, in both A Joyful Slog and All Ears – which was made by Belfast based filmmaker Gus Sutherland and editor Stuart Sloan. It’s a great pleasure to be able to promote the work of Irish artists and filmmakers, and these are the excellent films which were the inspiration to hold these nights in the first place.

Screen Nights are Bring Your Own Beer events and will have donations to support the artists and event. They will be low cost and interesting way to get out in January. A way of taking stock and taking on new ideas and perspective for the coming year. Screen Nights are organised by Keith Fennell and I and we hope to see you at Rutland this month. Check out a trailer/clip from each film below and I’ll be announcing the performers on Twitter in the lead up to each event.

A Joyful Slog // 10 January @ 9pm

A music documentary looking at some of Ireland’s DIY bands and culture over the last twenty years or so. It is a Dublin Community Television production and was made by the Community Of Independents collective that works with the channel. Featuring live footage and audio of various Irish artists as well as insightful interviews with some of the people that have been involved in the growth of this scene. Below is a clip of Owensie from Community Of Independents part of which features in A Joyful Slog.

All Ears // 17 January @ 9pm

All Ears is a documentary focusing on the famous Beat scene of Los Angeles. The L.A. community behind Low End Theory is often cited as origin of a now worldwide movement, and All Ears offers an insight into the minds of some of the producers responsible for the thriving scene. Looking at the network of record labels, collectives and events that have formed a united community that is continuing to grow and diversify by the day, the documentary also reflects upon the great impact of the scene’s two most notable figures, Madlib and the late J Dilla. PressPausePlay // 24 January @ 9pm

The digital revolution of the last decade has unleashed creativity and talent in an unprecedented way, with unlimited opportunities. But does democratised culture mean better art or is true talent instead drowned out? This is the question addressed by PressPausePlay, a documentary film containing interviews with some of the world’s most influential creators of the digital era.
